Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide high strength and high toughness to a low alloy steel after subjected to soft nitriding treatment by specifying the contents of C, Si, Mn, Cr and Al and regulating the Cr content according to the C content. CONSTITUTION:The compsn. of the steel is formed with, by weight, 0.4-0.7% C, <=1.0% Si, 0.6-2.0% Mn, >=0.2% Cr as well as (C content + 0.1)% Cr, <=0.05% Al and the balance consisting substantially of Fe. 0.015% P is furthermore incorporated into said steel at need and one or more kinds among <=0.15% S, <=0.3% Pb, <=0.3% Bi, <=0.1% Se and 0.0005-0.010% Ca are incorporated thereto. The C content is more preferably regulated to >0.5-0.7%. In the steel having said compsn., high strength and high toughness can be obtd. after the tufftriding treatment. Since the steel furthermore has excellent levelability after the tufftriding treatment, cracks, etc., are not generated at the time of leveling.
