Abstract
PURPOSE: To enhance the cold forgeability and machinability of a machine structural steel by adjusting each of the Ca, S, Pb and Bi contents to a proper amount, controlling the inclusions to appropriate shape, and dispersing them finely.
CONSTITUTION: This machine structural steel is obtd. by continuously adding much Ca to molten steel so as to convert dissolved S into CaS and eliminate or minimize Al2O3 by reduction in the presence of Ca. As a result, the inclusions are converted into CaS-CaO and dispersed finely and uniformly. Pb and/or Si is then added by a small amount in the form of a compound, metal or an alloy. Thus, the titled steel contains 0.001W0.05% Ca, 0.02W0.15% Pb and/or Bi and ≤0.005% S, and the inclusions are regulated to CaS-CaO, Pb, Bi and <0.001% Al2O3.
