A conventional suspension system, sometimes referred to as a follower or encircler, is disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 1,829,355;
It has been proposed to support an acoustic diaphragm, as exemplified by the structure of No. 3,563,337. The main purpose of the structure, similar to that of the present invention, is to prevent torsional or radial movement of the diaphragm while allowing its axial movement, reducing the stresses in the material forming the suspension, thereby The goal is to provide a long life for the suspension system and eliminate distortion by allowing the diaphragm to move in response as closely and accurately as possible to the signal at the voice coil.

In the present invention, the above object is achieved by providing a suspension device for a thin folded sheet material such as aluminum in the form of a toroid consisting of a series of pyramid-like structures, one end of which The section extends continuously along and is fixed to the edge of the diaphragm, and the other end section of the annular body is fixed to a support member, such as a conventional hollow frame.
Each structure extends no more than an approximately 15° arc, so that the base of the pyramidal structure is limited inwardly and outwardly by arcuate folds formed in the sheet material and extending in the radial direction of the diaphragm. Although it is limited in the horizontal direction by polygonal lines contained within the plane, it can be regarded as almost a trapezoid. The outer and inner surfaces of each pyramid are 3
It is rectangular in shape, and each transverse surface is formed by a pair of small triangular surfaces formed by a center fold line that is intermediate between the inner and outer circular fold lines and is concentric with the circular fold lines.

Axial movement of the diaphragm in response to the voice coil signal produces the above-mentioned fold line deflection that is different from the stretching of the suspension material itself. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION Accordingly, it is a primary object of the present invention to provide a novel acoustic diaphragm suspension system in which movement of the diaphragm causes deflection of a fold line formed in a foldable sheet material. Another object of the present invention is to provide a suspension system for a diaphragm having a circular edge, comprising inner and outer circular fold lines and a third circular fold line intermediate the circular fold lines, the suspension having a circular edge and a series of circular fold lines formed in the sheet material. The suspension device has a pyramid-like structure, and the apex of the pyramid is located on an intermediate circular fold line, and the sides of the substantially trapezoidal base of the pyramid are connected to the short arcs of the inner and outer circular fold lines and the diaphragm. DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS The object of the present invention is to provide a suspension device which lies in a line generally in a radial plane, and other objects will become clear from the following description of embodiments of the invention and reference is made to the accompanying drawings.

Referring to FIGS. 1 and 2, a typical hollow annular frame of dielectric rigid material is shown generally at 10, with mounting holes 12 spaced arcuately around the frame, by way of example only. has eight sets. In this form of the invention, a diaphragm;
The suspension is integrally formed of thin sheet aluminum, with the dome diaphragm indicated generally at 18 and the annular suspension indicated generally at 20. The dome itself is specifically indicated at 21. A conventional voice coil assembly secured to the diaphragm and designated generally at 22 is radially inward of the suspension and includes a bobbin 23 connected to terminals 25, 26, and the voice coil 24 itself. .
An annular skirt 28, clearly shown in FIG. The frame 10 is secured to the frame 10 using a fastening ring, as is well known in the art, and a suitable adhesive. All the structures and elements mentioned above are similar to the suspension system 2.
0 is recognized as being normal and well known in loudspeaker technology.

As clearly shown in FIG. 1, the suspension system 20 is formed to provide a series of identical structures extending circumferentially around the periphery of the dome 21. Each structure is pyramidal in shape. In the example shown in FIG. 1, there are 36 pyramid-like structures,
Each pyramid-like structure thus extends over an arc of 10°. For reasons discussed below, it is preferred in the present invention that the arcuate extent of each pyramidal structure does not exceed about 15 degrees.

The bases of the structures 30, 32 are substantially trapezoidal in shape, defined inwardly and outwardly by arcs of circular fold lines 40, 41, respectively, and laterally defined by fold lines included in a plane extending in the radial direction of the diaphragm. It is recognized that the direction is limited. Each lateral limit is formed by two angularly related line segments, as shown in cross-section in FIG. In particular, the transverse fold line shown in FIG. 8 has segments 44, 45 that slope forward from the inner and outer circular fold lines 40, 41, respectively.
Segments 44, 45 have inner and outer circular fold lines 4
They meet at a point 46 on a circular broken line 48 located midway between 0 and 41.

When these parts are at rest, the inner and outer circular fold lines 40, 41 lie in a common plane perpendicular to the axis of the diaphragm, as shown particularly clearly in FIGS. 4, 7 and 8. The signal applied to the voice coil 24 is directed to the left and right in these figures by an inner circular fold line 40.
, and this movement is accommodated in this suspension by a slight deflection of some of the fold lines, with minimal stretching of the sheet material forming the suspension. The pyramid-like structure flattens out slightly as the fold line 40 moves.

The base of the pyramid is of course not trapezoidal in the geometrical sense, but it approaches this shape as the extent of the arc of each pyramid-like structure decreases, so that the arc does not deflect or bend along the fold line during operation. Closer approach to strings lying in a straight line to facilitate bending.
An arc range of about 15° or more will inhibit this bending unduly. The embodiment of the invention described above has 36 arcs of 10° each.
It has a pyramid-like structure. FIG. 9 shows a portion of the suspension system of the invention having 72 pyramid-like structures each extending in an arc of 5°;
Certain structural features are designated with 100 more symbols than corresponding features in FIG.

As described above, the suspension device of the present invention is provided with a large number of pyramid-shaped structures protruding alternately from one side to the other in the axial direction on the periphery of the diaphragm. The structures can be freely deformed in the direction of rising or flattening at the same time without interfering with each other. This allows the acoustic diaphragm to easily move axially by slightly deflecting the multiple fold lines that define the pyramid-like structure of the suspension, while the great stiffness of the pyramid-like structure Prevent movement in the direction. As a result, the stresses in the individual parts of the sheet material making up the suspension device can be kept very low, increasing the life of the diaphragm containing the suspension device. In addition, undesirable twisting motion of the acoustic diaphragm is minimized, resulting in the excellent effects of eliminating acoustic distortion and widening the upper limit frequency.
