Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent the failure in connection by the influence of air bubbles by subjecting optical fibers to a pretreatment to crush the air bubbles by previous heating then welding and connecting the fibers. CONSTITUTION:The air bubbles 2 in the heated part are crushed when discharge electrodes 3 are set at the specified point from the terminal of the optical fiber 1 having the air bubbles 2 and the fiber is heated to melt by discharging electricity from the electrodes. The left side part of the heated part is confined in the fiber at this time but the part to be heated is just a part and since the volume of the air bubbles is larger than this part, the bubbles do not expand and burst. Since the right side is open, the bubbles in this part do not burst. The air bubble part is crushed by the force of surface tension and the solid glass is successively formed when the electrodes in the discharge state are moved to the right, i.e., toward the terminal. The optical fibers are welded and connected after the air bubbles therein are crushed to form the solid fibers in such a manner and, therefore, the increase in the transmission loss of the optical fibers by the influence of the air bubbles is prevented.
