Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve safety by arranging a grounding sheath made of a conductive material on the external surface of an insulation layer thereby making the potential of the external surface of an optical marine cable equal to that of the sea water. CONSTITUTION:A grounding sheath 20 is formed by covering the external surface of an insulation layer 6 with a conductive material made of a conductive rubber conductive plastic mixed with conductive mettalic powder or by winding the said material in a shape of a tape around the said layer 6. In the case an optical marine cable 100 is laid on the seabed while applying a high voltage through an electricity supply conductor 5, the grounding sheath 20 becomes of an equal potential with the sea water due to the conductivity of the grounding sheath 20. As a result, there is no possibility of a high voltage being applied to a human body of a person even if the touches the optical marine cable 100 during the laying work and therefore safety is improved.
