Abstract
PURPOSE:To discriminate a track pitch rapidly and surely by constituting a prescribed pattern which starts from a binary signal indicating that a tracking error is not within a prescribed range. CONSTITUTION:The titled device is provided with a means for detecting the tracking error of reproducing heads HA, HB based on a pilot signal reproduced from a track, a discriminating means 13 for discriminating whether the tracking error is within the prescribed range or not for every cycle of tracing of the reproducing head, a converting means for converting the output of the discriminating means 13 to the binary signal, a detecting means for detecting that the generating patterns of the (m) pieces of binary signals successively obtained from the converting means coincide with the prescribed pattern of (m) bits (m) is integer 4 or more) starting from the binary signal indicating that the tracking error is not within the prescribed range and a switching means for switching the carrying speed of a recording medium based on the output of the detecting means.
