Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent a cam shifting period from overlapping a cam lifting period by synchronizing the start time of cam's movement with the rotational angle of the cam, in a device in which the switching characteristic of a valve is changed according to the axial movement of the cam shaft of a cam for driving the valve. CONSTITUTION:A cam for driving an intake valve for its opening and closing through a tappet 5 is composed of a cam 11 for low speed and a cam 12 for high speed which is arranged to engage with/disengage from the tappet 5 by being reciprocated along the axial direction of a spline shaft 9 composing a cam shaft 3 by means of a switching means (not shown). A timing mechanism 35 is provided on the cam 12 for high speed to start the motion thereof synchronously with the rotation angle of a cam shaft 3. The timing mechanism 35 is composed of a rod member 38 fitted to a sliding bore 37 formed in the cam 12 in its moving direction, and a trigger member 39 which crosses the sliding bore 37 and freely appearing from dissappearing in the radially outside direction from a cam face 12c.
