Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a lightweight crucible for melting metal reduced in radiant heat toward the outside, excellent in heating efficiency, and having superior thermal shock resistance, by providing a crucible composed principally of carbon or graphite and constituted of a porous body of a specific bulk density. CONSTITUTION:A crucible for melting metal is principally composed of carbon or graphite and constituted of a porous body of 0.15-1.1g/cm<3> bulk density and a carbon film provided, if necessary, to the surface of this porous body, and, since this crucible is free from reduction in heating efficiency caused by the dissipation of radiant heat in large quantities toward the outside, a material to be heated can be rapidly and efficiently heated by using this crucible. As to the above porous body, the strength of the crucible is deteriorated when bulk density is below 0.15g/cm<3>, while, when it exceeds 1.1g/cm<3>, electric conductivity is increased and disadvantage is brought about at the time of induction heating. Further, the above porous body can be obtained by using a phenol resin body, etc., as raw material and subjecting the above to heating treatment in vacuum, etc., at about 800-1500 deg.C.
