Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce a uniform carbon-silicon carbide composite material having excellent acid resistance, by blending a polycarbosilastyrene copolymer with granular carbon in a specific ratio and sintering the blend into a composite molded article of a given shape.
CONSTITUTION: A composite molded article is formed from a mixture consisting of 1W50wt.% first component comprising a polycarbosilastyrene copolymer and 50W99wt.% second component comprising granule or powder of carbon or a precursor thereof (pitch) and sintered in an inert gas to give a dense, high-quality composite molded article. A polycarbosilastyrene copolymer used having the ratio of carbosilane bond and silastyrene bond of 30/70W70/30 and 1,000W50,000 average molecular weight is used as the polycarbosilastyrene copolymer. 1W80wt.% based on the first component of a boron compound may be added as a crosslinking agent and 0.2W20wt.% lauric acid as an organic lubricant. Consequently, a carbon-silicon carbide composite material hardly causing reduction in weight even by long-time use at high temperature in air is obtained.
