Abstract
To produce a sintered silicon carbide object having temperature-resistant properties, the procedure is as follows: A substantially homogeneous mixture of solid particles is prepared, whose particles are smaller than 1 mu m and which essentially consists of silicon carbide. The latter is composed of ss-silicon carbide and 0.05 to 5% by weight of alpha -silicon carbide, relative to the ss-silicon carbide, the ss-silicon carbide particles having an average particle size of up to 0.45 mu m and the alpha -silicon carbide particles having a particle size at least twice that of the ss-silicon carbide particles. In addition, the mixture must contain a boron addition and a quantity of a carbonaceous material. The mixture is moulded to give an unsintered object and sintered at a temperature in the region from 1950 to 2300 DEG C in an inert atmosphere. The sintered object has a density of at least 80% of the theoretical density for silicon carbide and contains alpha -silicon carbide in a quantity of at least 70% by weight, relative to the total quantity of silicon carbide. The process can be used for the fabrication of shaped objects, for example of pipes or hollow gas turbine blades.
