Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled sintered material having excellent heat-resistance, oxidation resistance, strength and toughness and useful as a high-temperature material, etc., by mixing a specific powder with whiskers, etc., having higher sintering temperature than the sintering temperature of the powder, and pressing, forming and sintering the mixture. CONSTITUTION:A dispersion (A) is produced by dispersing 1-50wt.% of whisker (e.g. SiC) having a diameter of 0.1-5mum in a solvent under ultrasonic vibration. Separately, a powdery raw material mixture (B) is produced by mixing a matrix raw material powder containing Si3N4, silicon oxynitride or an inorganic oxide (e.g. alumina, mullite or zirconia) and having an average particle diameter of <=10mum with 1-30wt.% of particles (e.g. SiC) having particle diameter of 5-60mum. The components A and B are mixed with each other at a whisker/ particle weight ratio of 0.5-20 and, as necessary, 1-15wt.% of a sintering assistant such as Al or Y is added to the mixture. The obtained mixture is compression molded and the molded article is sintered e.g. by hot-press sintering.
