Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent turbulence in focus error signals, by providing a servo photodetector so as to be oriented at an approximately right angle to light flux emitted by a semiconductor laser element when viewed from the laser element. CONSTITUTION:A monitoring photodetector 3 is formed on the same plane of a semiconductor substrate 1 on which a semiconductor laser element 2 is mounted, and at the position where light flux from the laser element is incident. A servo photodetector 4 is also provided on the same plane so as to be oriented at approximately 90 degrees to the light flux from the semiconductor laser element 2 when viewed from the laser element. According to such arrangement, no light flux from the semiconductor laser element is directly incident on the servo photodetector and hence no turbulence is caused in signal light.
