Abstract

PURPOSE:To almost completely prevent deterioration of alpha-monochloroxylene useful as an intermediate raw material for raw materials of synthetic polymers, by adding inexpensive methionine as a stabilizer to the alpha-monochloroxylene or a chlorination reaction product of xylene containing the above-mentioned substance. CONSTITUTION:Stabilization of alpha-monochloroxylene is contrived by adding 0.001-10.0wt.% (preferably 0.005-5wt.%) methionine to the above-mentioned substance or a chlorination reaction product (e.g. alpha,alpha-dichloroxylene or alpha,alpha,alpha'- trichloroxylene) of xylene containing the afore-mentioned substance. The methionine may be any of DL-, L- and D-methionine and inexpensive feed-grade substance may be used. The above-mentioned method is carried out at a temperature of the melting point of the raw material - 260 deg.C.
