Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent oxidation of titanium or titanium alloy, in a heating stage by applying the mixture of plastic powders containing aluminum powders of specific particle sizes and a specific amount and a solvent of a specific amount to titanium or titanium alloy. CONSTITUTION:Before heating titanium of titanium alloy block or slab, an antioxidant is prepared by mixing 100pts.wt. powders containing 45-75wt.% aluminum powders of particle sizes of <=100 mesh and a remaining part of plastic powders and 40-200pts.wt. solvent and is applied to a titanium alloy block with a prescribed amount of aluminum powders; the block is air dried and is put into a furnace. By raising temp. in the furnace, the plastic powders are decomposed into gas and sublimed; but the aluminum powders remain and make a continuous molten film on surfaces of the titanium alloy block when the block is heated at a temp. higher than a prescribed temp., and then form a titanium-aluminum intermetallic compound. Thus, diffusion of oxygen into metallic titanium is restrained.
