Abstract

PURPOSE: To deoxidize steel powder or the like containing oxygen, and improve aptitude as material for powder metallurgy, by adding carbon powder, as required, to atomized steel powder or atomized alloy powder containing oxygen, and heating in nonoxidizing atmosphere containing hydrogen by 4% or less.
CONSTITUTION: Low carbon steel or alloy steel is pulverized into fine powder by atomizing method to produce material for powder metallurgy. At this time, since oxide film is formed on the surface of atomized steel powder or the like, it becomes inadequate as material for powder metallurgy. To avoid this, the powder is heated to 600W1,300°C in nonoxidizing gas atmosphere containing hydrogen by 4% or less, and is deoxidized by the catalytic action of hydrogen, using the carbon contained in the steel as reducing agent. In order to prevent decarburization, when adding carbon powder, the heating temperature is set to 700W1,300°C, and the carbon content added should be less than 1%. As a result, steel powder or alloy powder free fromoxide film, best suited as material for powder metallurgy may be obtained.
