Abstract

PURPOSE:To produce a nonmagnetic steel which has high strength and is less softened in weld heat-affected zone by subjecting a high-Mn steel added with a small amt. of Nb to hot rolling at a controlled heating temp. and rolling finish temp. and further controlling the accelerated cooling conditions after cooling. CONSTITUTION:A steel ingot or billet consisting, by wt.%, of 0.10-0.40% C, 0.05-2.50% Si, 18-30% Mn, 0.01-0.10% Nb, 0.005-0.200% N, and the balance Fe and unavoidable impurities is heated to >=1,000 deg.C and <=1,250 deg.C and is subjected to the hot rolling which is completed at >=800 deg.C. The rolled steel is then subjected to the accelerated cooling by water cooling at 1-50 deg.C/sec average cooling rate from 800 deg.C down to 500 deg.C. The high Mn nonmagnetic steel which is less softened in the weld heat-affected zone and has the high strength is thereby obtd. This steel is adequate for a nonmagnetic structural material to be used for nuclear fusion reactors and linear motor cars.
