Abstract

PURPOSE:To easily obtain the title isotropic high-strength carbon material having a low thermal expansion coefficient by mixing a specified amt. of the powder of coke, graphite, etc., into the carbonaceous mesophase pellets having a self-sintering property, molding the mixture, roasting, and graphitizing the molded product. CONSTITUTION:The powder of crude coke, calcined coke, and graphite or their mixture is mixed within the range of 10-40wt.%, based on the total weight, into the carbonaceous mesophase pellets surfaced with petroleum or a coal pitch component and having a self-sintering property. The mixture is then molded without using a binder, and the molded product is roasted and then graphitized. By this method, an isotropic high-strength carbonaceous material having an expansion coefficient appropriate for the coating of SiC, etc., is obtained.
