Abstract
PURPOSE:To reduce the production cost of the titled device by providing a signal detection optical system comprising a thin film waveguide element to an assembled optical system of an optical pickup so as to attain small size and light weight of the device without losing the characteristic of the optical system. CONSTITUTION:A diffraction grating 15 is formed to the side of a face 12a of a transparent base 12 on which a radiated light from a semiconductor laser 1 is made incident and the grating 15 divides the incident light into the 0-th order diffracted light for detecting an information signal and a 1st order diffracted light for detecting a track error signal. The diffracted light is made incident on a recording medium 6 via a collimate lens 4 and an objective lens 5 and the reflected light from the medium 6 is led to the thin film waveguide path 13 via the lenses 5, 4. The waveguide path 13 is arranged on the base 12 and a grating coupler 16 is provided corresponding to the grating 15. The light beam 18b for detecting information signal in the reflected light from the medium 6 and the light beams 18a, 18c for detecting track error signal are led to the waveguide path 13 by the coupler 16 and the tangential direction of the slot in the center of the coupler 16 is made nearly at a right angle to the direction of the slot of the grating 15 to make the size of the device small.
