Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the S/N of an information reproduction signal by inserting an attenuation means attenuating variable a light beam in an optical path of a laser beam of an optical means. CONSTITUTION:The light beam radiated from a semiconductor laser 2 passes through a polarizer 11 to form a light spot on an optical disk 1 through a diffraction grating 3, a beam split prism 4 and an objective lens 5. The reflected light of the light spot is modulated in response to the information on the disk 1, branched by the prism 4 and enters a photodetector 7. In this case, the output of the laser 2 is set so that the S/N of the light beam is maximized. On the other hand, the polarizer 11 is set so as to be tilted by an angle theta thereby allowing the output level of the detector 7 to enter a prescribed range through the adjustment. Thus, the S/N of the information reproducing signal is improved and high information reproduction capability is obtained.
