来は、一定量の燻化ガスを炉内に充填しつつ、狭
く絞つた煙突口から除々に排出することにより充
填した燻化ガスに流動を生じさせて瓦に接触させ
るようになつており、燻化ガスの流動が極く僅か
で、瓦との接触が十分に行なわれないため、所要
の厚さの炭素被膜を形成するには、大量の燻化ガ
スを充填して炉内の燻化ガスの濃度を高くする必
要があつた。しかし、このようにすると、炉内に
充填された燻化ガスの大部分が未使用のまま排出
されることになつて不経済であるばかりでなく、
排出ガスによる大気汚染が問題となつていた。ま
た、大量の燻化ガスを充填すると炉内の温度が低
下して熱分解が活発に行なわれなくなり、さらに
は、炉内の燻化ガスの流れが不均一であつて、製
品にバラツキを生ずる欠点があつた。

く接触し、充填された燻化ガスが有効に利用され
て所望厚さの炭素被膜を燻化室全体において均一
に形成することができ、しかも、小量の燻化ガス
を充填すればよく、経済的であり、かつ、燻化室
内の温度を低下させることがなく、さらに、排気
ガスの濃度が低下する効果を奏する。
