Abstract

PURPOSE:To remove luminescent spots due to spacers and to form a liquid crystal display device having high display contrast and reducing the transmissibity of a dark level at the no impression of voltage to the device by using dyed fine grains having prescribed grain size or opaque fine grains as the spacers holding a gap to be filled with liquid crystal. CONSTITUTION:Optionally patterned transparent electrodes 23, 24 and orientation films 25 are formed on the surfaces of a pair of transparent base boards 21, 22 of which sides are contacted with liquid crystal. Then, dyed fine grains having the prescribed grain size or opaque fine grains 26 are scattered into the gap between both the base boards of which orientation has bee processed as the spacers holding the gap at a fixed interval, the peripheral parts of the gap are sealed to assemble a cell and the gap part is filled with a liquid crystal material 28 to form a liquid crystal display device. The liquid crystal display device obtained by said procedure can reduce its transmissibity at the no impression of voltage by several ten % as compared with a conventional liquid crystal display device and high display contrast can be obtained.

Electrode groups 3 and 4 divided into strips and an alignment film 6 are formed on the surfaces of a pair of transparent substrates 1 and 2 that are in contact with the liquid crystal, and glass fibers or fine resin particles are all scattered and spacers 8 are provided. The liquid crystal material 7 is placed in the gap formed by the spacer, which is pasted together so that the liquid crystal materials 7 and 4 face each other perpendicularly.
In the liquid crystal display device constructed as described above, each intersection of the divided electrode groups 3 and 4 is By forming picture elements 10 and selectively applying voltage to these electrode groups, any information can be displayed in its entirety.

Problems to be Solved by the Invention However, with the above configuration, especially in the case of a negative display that shows a dark level when a voltage is applied, it is desirable that the transmittance of the dark level when no voltage is applied is as low as possible. However, since a colorless spacer is used, the part of the spacer where there is no liquid crystal appears as a bright spot, and the transmittance increases accordingly, which has a very negative effect on display contrast.

If a liquid crystal display device is constructed without using a spacer in order to avoid bright spots, it will be difficult to create a uniform gap between both substrates, resulting in poor display quality such as color unevenness. Furthermore, even with the minimum necessary fiber forming conditions such as minimizing bright spots and maintaining a uniform gap between both substrates, even the slightest error will change the display characteristics, resulting in a loss of stability, yield, or work efficiency. This is a significant decrease.

Effect of the present invention With the above-described configuration, in the case of a negative display showing a dark level in a state where no voltage is applied, the spacer, which conventionally became a bright spot and increased the transmittance and adversely affected the display contrast, is dyed. Since it is opaque, it is possible to obtain a liquid crystal display device with good display quality that can uniformly fill the gap between the substrates without increasing the transmittance.

In FIG. 1, transparent electrode groups 23, 24 and an alignment film 26, which are patterned into an arbitrary shape, are provided on the sides of a pair of transparent substrates 21, 22 that are in contact with the liquid crystal. Next, dyed fine particles or opaque fine particles 26 having a predetermined diameter are sprinkled as a spacer to maintain a constant gap between the two substrates 21 and 22 which have been subjected to alignment treatment, and the periphery is sealed 27 and bonded together to assemble the cell and liquid crystal. The material 28 is filled to form a liquid crystal display device.

Effects of the Invention The present invention uses dyed fine particles having a predetermined diameter or opaque fine particles as a spacer to maintain a gap for filling the liquid crystal of a liquid crystal display device, so that the liquid crystal display device can remain dark even when no voltage is applied. In addition to being able to obtain a liquid crystal display device with low transmittance at the level and excellent display contrast, the work involved in establishing precise spacer formation conditions to avoid bright spots and the deterioration of yield due to display quality, etc. Problems such as work efficiency and cost can also be significantly improved.
