However, a new problem arises in that the FRM is susceptible to cracking due to the influence of the corner portions, and other problems also remain.

It is preferable to use an average film because a lot of foreign matter gets around the graphite whiskers, which may cause problems with the film strength, or the ratio of graphite whiskers in the final composite material decreases, which has a negative effect on improving the strength. A thickness of 10% by volume or less is preferable.

For example, when coating metal compounds such as carbides, nitrides, borides, and oxides, active gases react with hydrocarbons, nitrogen (ammonia), and halogens. Boron oxide, oxygen, etc. are used, and when the metal compound to be coated is a metal carrier, hydrogen may be used in combination, and as a carrier gas, rare gases such as argon and helium, other non-reactive gases, or the above-mentioned gases may be used as the carrier gas. (After distributing l, the inside of this preparation chamber 31 and reaction chamber 2 are reduced to 1 TORR at a pressure reduction rate of about l TORR/sec.
Reduce the pressure to a certain degree. Thereafter, the electric m opening/closing door 32a is opened, the port 30 in the *S chamber 31 is inserted into the reaction chamber 2, and the port 30 is heated to, for example, 350 to 500°C using a heating device, and the inside of the reaction chamber 2 is heated, for example, to 350 to 500°C. 5XIO-? Make the vacuum below TORR. After that, a raw material gas and an active gas that provide the metal forming the m-layer are introduced, and the plasma is excited by high-frequency irradiation, whereby the raw material gas and the active gas react to become excited, and the graphite whiskers W are formed. A coating of Ti3Nm, for example, is formed on the surface. In this method, the surface of the graphite whiskers W dispersed on the port 30 is coated with a metal compound, so that the surface of the graphite whisker W housed on the port 30 and the inside of the aggregate are coated with a metal compound. There is a possibility that the extent of the metal compound coating is slightly different from that of the graphite whisker W.

Because the wetting property with the base metal is good and the dispersibility is also good, it is possible to produce a fiber-reinforced composite material with a large strength. Because it has a rounded shape at both ends,
It is possible to form a good fiber-reinforced composite material that does not cause cracks in the base metal from the corners of the reinforcing fibers, unlike when graphite whiskers obtained by the substrate growth method are used. A number of superior metal compound coated graphite whiskers can be provided.
