Abstract

PURPOSE:To assure safe start of an engine starter operating only when a shift mechanism is in the neutral position by automatically returning the shift mechanism to the neutral position, as the starting switch is turned on, irrespective of the selected position of the shift mechanism. CONSTITUTION:A shift mechanism 8 is shiftingly provided so as to selectively engage one of multistage speed change gears meshing one another with a transmission shaft 6. The shift mechanism 8 is provided with shift position detecting means 24 for detecting selected positions and a neutral position and a starter adapted for permitting start of the engine only when the shift mechanism 8 is in the neutral position. There is provided a return mechanism adapted for returning the shift mechanism 8 located in any of non-neutral positions to the neutral position, when a starting switch is turned on, so that a driving clutch 14 is disengaged through a clutch wire 29 by either depression of a clutch pedal or turning of a shift lever 20. Therefore, irrespective of the selected position of the shift mechanism 8, engine starting is safely achieved by operation of the starting switch.
