This sensor length is limited by wafer size.

Ideally, they should be arranged in a straight line. However, when arranged in a straight line, in a CCD sensor with a high pixel density, there is a large ineffective area where pixels cannot be formed due to unevenness of the cut surface at the end of the CCD sensor or crystal distortion during cutting near the cut surface. This cannot be ignored with respect to the size of the pixel, and there are places where there are no pixels at the connection between the CCD sensor and the CCD sensor. In other words, there is a problem that characters, etc. cannot be read at the connection part with the CCD sensor. In fact, when the pixel density is 16 pixels/B, the pixel pitch is 62.5 μm, whereas the roughness of the cutting surface is at least about 10 μm with a commonly used wafer cutter. Therefore, a minimum pixel interval of 20 μm is formed in the connecting portion. However, it is not preferable to change the pixel pitch only at the connecting portions, and the interval between the CCD sensor transition portions is widened. For this reason, it is inevitable that one pixel will be missing at the joint between the CCD sensors.

There is a method of arranging a plurality of sensors in a staggered manner, as disclosed in Japanese Patent Laid-open No. 64 and Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 57-129065. However, when using this method, the reading positions of the CCD sensors in each of the two rows in the sub-scanning direction are different, so in order to obtain output signals that are uniform in the sub-scanning direction, it is necessary to
A line memory and a processing circuit are required after the sensor section consisting of the CD sensor. Therefore, using the method of arranging CCD sensors in a staggered manner has the disadvantage that the reading device becomes complicated.

In this way, it is possible to ensure the width that inevitably occurs due to the unevenness of the line sensor cutting portion, and to prevent missing pixels even when the pixel pitch in the main scanning direction is constant.
