The present invention contains an alkylene-alkyl acrylate copolymer, a halogenated flame retardant, antimony oxide, and an oxide, carbonate, hydroxide or sulfate of magnesium or calcium and has improved combustion properties. The present invention relates to compositions having flame retardant properties and reduced gassing rates. The composition is particularly useful as a jacket material around industrial control kegels and telephone wires and cables, and as an insulator around electrical conductors. Compositions based on olefin polymers, such as alkylene-alkyl acrylate copolymers, have been proposed for use in a variety of industrial applications because of their beneficial physical and electrical properties. For example, alkylene-alkyl acrylate copolymers are corrosion resistant, tenacious and abrasion resistant. Therefore, alkylene-alkyl acrylate copolymers are proposed for use in compositions to be used as jacket materials around industrial control cables and telephone wires and cables, and as insulation around electrical conductors. It was done. Although alkylene-alkyl acrylate copolymers have properties that make them desirable for use in compositions intended for use as jacket materials and as insulators as described above, alkylene-alkyl acrylate copolymers have , suffers from the disadvantage of being easily flammable. In order to make these copolymers flame retardant and to reduce gas production during combustion, halogenated flame retardants and alkaline earth metal salts or A base was added to it. The compositions disclosed in this U.S. patent application are flame retardant, do not produce thick smoke when burned, do not produce high levels of acidic and corrosive gases, and are commercially available which exhibit reduced residual flame. It is an attractive system. In view of today's increasingly stringent industrial standards and increasingly stringent government regulations, compositions characterized by a high degree of flame retardancy and by no unacceptable deterioration of the other desirable properties mentioned above. Something is needed urgently. The present invention provides compositions that meet the need for improved flame retardancy while maintaining other desirable properties to acceptable standards. Compositions of the invention useful for the above applications include:
Usually solid alkylene-alkyl acrylate copolymer, from about 1 to about 30% by weight, preferably from about 5 to about 20% by weight.
% by weight of a halogenated flame retardant and about 0.5 to about 30% by weight, preferably about 2.5 to about 12% by weight of an oxide, carbonate, hydroxide or sulfate of magnesium or calcium, and about 0.5 to about 15% by weight. % preferably about 1~
Contains about 10% by weight of antimony oxide. Where the composition is intended to be used in molding applications to make articles such as flame retardant waste paper baskets, furniture, etc., the amount of alkaline earth metal salt or base in the composition will be from about 0.5 to about 50% It may be expressed in weight percent. Particularly desirable compositions for use as insulators around electrical conductors are usually solid alkylene-
an alkyl acrylate copolymer, about 1 to about 30% by weight of a halogenated flame retardant, about 0.5 to 20% by weight of an alkaline earth metal salt or base as described above;
about 5% by weight of antimony oxide. A particularly desirable composition for use as a jacket around industrial control cables and telephone wires and cables comprises a normally solid alkylene-alkyl acrylate copolymer and from about 1 to about 30 weight percent of a halogenated flame retardant. , 20 to about 30% by weight of the above alkaline earth metal salt or base, and about 1 to about 10% by weight of antimony oxide. Weight percentages are based on the total weight of the composition (100% by weight) unless otherwise specified. Also, mixtures of each substance can be used if desired. The alkylene-alkyl acrylate copolymers of the present invention are known compounds prepared by reacting alkylene with alkyl acrylates and typically contain from about 2 to about 50% by weight of bound alkyl acrylates. do. Suitable alkenes are ethylene, propylene, 1-butene, isobutylene, 1-bentene, 2-methylbutene-1, 3-methylbutene-1, hexene, heptene-1, octene-1 and the like. The alkylene portion of the alkylene-alkyl acrylate copolymer contains 2 to 18 carbon atoms, preferably 2 to 3 carbon atoms. Suitable alkyl acrylate monomers copolymerized with alkylene have the following formula: Within the above formula, R 1 is hydrogen or methyl and R 2 is alkyl having 1 to 8 carbon atoms. Specific compounds covered by this formula include methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, n-butyl acrylate, t-butyl acrylate, n-butyl methacrylate, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, etc. It is. Alkylene-alkyl acrylate copolymer is
Generally, they have a density (ASTMD 1505, conditioning as in ASTM D 147-72) of about 0.92 to about 0.94 and a melt index (ASTM D-1237 at 44 psi test pressure) of about 0.5 to about 500 dg/min. For purposes of this invention, preferred copolymers are ethylene-ethyl acrylate, generally having from about 3 to about 40% by weight bound ethyl acrylate, preferably from about 5 to about 20% by weight bound ethyl acrylate. It is a copolymer. Bound alkyl acrylates are conveniently determined by infrared analysis. Halogenated flame retardants useful for the purposes of this invention are well known to those skilled in the art. These flame retardants are halogenated (brominated or chlorinated) organic compounds. Preferred halogenated organic compounds include chlorinated polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, polyvinyl chloride copolymers, halogenated paraffin waxes, chlorinated alicyclic hydrocarbons, and brominated aromatic compounds. Most preferred are decabromodiphenyl and the formula [In the above formula, R is each chlorine or bromine, and n is an integer from 1 to 6], such as ethylene (including bistetrabromophthalimide). Calcium or magnesium oxides, carbonates of the present invention Calcium or magnesium oxides, carbonates, hydroxides or sulphates are commercially available in various forms and grades. Preferred coating materials are metal salts of fatty acids, organosilanes and organotitanates. Examples of metal components in salts of fatty acids are found in the Periodic Table (Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, Part Acids used to form metal salts are 8
Saturated or unsaturated monobasic or dibasic branched or straight chain fatty acids having ~20 carbon atoms. Such atoms that may be included within the practice of this invention include, but are not limited to, palmitin, stearin, laurin, olein, sebacin, ricinolene, parcitolein, and the like. The preferred acid is stearic acid, whereas the preferred metal salts are calcium stearate and zinc stearate. The organic silane is preferably an alkoxysilane such as alkylalkoxysilane, alkenylalkoxysilane, alkylalkoxysilane, alkylarylalkoxysilane, alkenylarylalkoxysilane and alkynylarylalkoxysilane. Suitable alkoxysilanes include, for example, methyltriethoxysilane, methyltris(2-methoxyethoxy)silane, dimethyldiethoxysilane, allyltrimethoxysilane, and the like. Also suitable are vinylsilanes such as vinyltris(2-methoxyethoxy)silane, vinyltrimethoxysilane, vinyltriethoxysilane and the like. If desired, the organosilane itself can be included as an additive in the composition. Examples of suitable organic titanates fall within the general formula Ti( OR3 ) 4 , in which R3 is a hydrocarbon group. Examples of organic titanates are tetrabutyl titanate, tetraisopropyl titanate and the like. Alkaline earth metal compounds are processed using a two-roll mill,
Coating can be accomplished by mixing from about 0.05 to about 5 parts by weight of hydrophobic material per 100 parts by weight of alkaline earth metal salt or base in a Henschel mixer, Waring blender, or the like. Any of antimony oxide, antimony trioxide, antimony tetroxide and antimony pentoxide is suitable for the purposes of the present invention. Antimony trioxide is preferred. Also, if desired, national
Product name “ONCOR” by Lead Company
It is also possible to use antimony oxide in the form of a complexed salt, such as those commercially available under: These complexing salts are
Illustrated by antimony oxide-zinc silicate salt. The compositions of the present invention may contain other additives as are well known in the art depending on the end use of the composition. For example, the compositions generally contain on the order of about 0.05 to 4.0% by weight of peroxide, antioxidants, conductive carbon black, and moldable compositions, curable compositions, etc. to cure the compositions into crosslinked products. Other additives commonly used in compositions intended to be extruded into film materials, coatings, adhesives, etc. may be included. When the compositions of the invention are intended for use in wire and cable or molding applications, it is advantageous for the compositions to contain fillers. A preferred filler is talc, especially talc coated with the metal salts of fatty acids described above. The compositions of the present invention are conveniently prepared by mixing or blending their components in suitable equipment. The alkylene-alkyl acrylate copolymer and other desired ingredients can be mixed together by any of the techniques used in the art for mixing and compounding thermoplastics into a homogeneous mass. Prior to or during mixing of the components, the calcium or magnesium oxide, carbonate, hydroxide or sulfate can be coated by known techniques. For mixing, the components can be melted (fracked) in a variety of equipment including multi-roll mills, screw mills, continuous mixers, extruders, and Banbury mixers. When all of the solid components in the composition are available in powder form or as small particles, the composition is prepared by first making a mixture of each component, e.g. It is most conveniently prepared by kneading on a two roll mill and continuing kneading until an intimate mixture of the components is obtained. In cases where the copolymer is not available in powder form, the composition may be prepared by introducing the copolymer into a two-roll mill, kneading it until it forms a band around the rolls, and then adding the remaining ingredients. It can be prepared by adding the mixture and continuing kneading until an intimate mixture is obtained. The roll is preferably maintained at a temperature within the range of 80 DEG to 135 DEG C. and below the decomposition temperature of the peroxide compound, if used. The composition in sheet form is removed from the mill and then cut into pieces, typically die-like, into shapes suitable for subsequent processing. The composition can then be extruded onto a wire or cable or other substrate. If the composition of the invention is chemically curable,
These are extruded onto wire or cable or other substrates and used conventional curing operations to
It is cured at elevated temperatures above 200°C, preferably 200-230°C. The following examples are illustrative of the invention and are not intended to limit the scope of the invention in any way. Example 1 A composition was prepared by mixing the ingredients listed in Table 1 for about 5 minutes in a 40g Brabender mixer preheated to a temperature of 120°C. After 5 minutes, the contents of the Brabender were drained, hot flattened in a press, and allowed to cool. Using samples of each composition, the following conditions, namely pressure
Test plates having dimensions of 3 x 8 x 0.125 inches were prepared in a press under 5000 psi, temperature 180°C, time cycle 15 minutes. The test plates were then subjected to the extreme oxygen test ASTM D-2863-70, which is a measure of flame retardancy. The compositions of Example 1 and Controls 1-3 were in parts by weight. The data in Table 1 is based on a composition based on an alkylene-alkyl acrylate copolymer, ethylene-ethyl acrylate (Example 1) and a composition based on an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (Control 1). ) clearly shows that the composition of Example 1 has a superior flame retardancy of 26.2 compared to 23.3 for the composition of Control 1. Furthermore, the data for Example 1 and Controls 1-3 demonstrate that the presence of both antimony oxide and an alkaline earth metal base or salt in an alkylene-alkyl acrylate copolymer-based composition can cause problems with the composition. Flammability has been demonstrated to be superior (26.3 compared to 25.3) compared to similar compositions containing no alkaline earth metal bases or salts. The significance of the presence of alkaline earth metal salts or bases in compositions based on alkylene-alkyl acrylate copolymers, i.e. prevents the formation of dense smoke during combustion and reduces the formation of acidic and corrosive gases. This and the reduction of residual light have been demonstrated in other US applications of the present applicant. When antimony oxide and an alkaline earth metal salt or base are both present in the ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer-based composition (Control 1), the flame retardancy of the composition is poorer (23.3 compared to 24.2) compared to a similar composition containing no salt (control 2).
