In the past, various disposable diapers have been proposed for use on infants. Such diapers can usually be classified into two categories: That is, (a) a diaper that is rectangular and can be partially unfolded when applied to an infant, and (b) a diaper that has a special shape other than a rectangle and is designed to fit the infant well. In general, rectangular diapers are difficult to provide a comfortable fit for infants (particularly at the thighs of the diaper), while diapers with unusual shapes are often difficult to manufacture. In many cases, specially shaped diapers require the use of complex and precise machinery to mass produce, resulting in higher selling prices for consumers. Moreover, it is desirable that the specially shaped diaper prevents leakage as it ages, especially in the thighs of the diaper where the most fluid transfers into the diaper.

In order to achieve the above object, one method of manufacturing a disposable diaper of the present invention covers the back side of an absorbent pad with a rectangular fluid-impermeable back sheet that is wider than the absorbent pad, and covers both sides of the back sheet. The edges are each folded inward of the diaper along folding lines that extend in the longitudinal direction between the side edges of the absorbent pad and the side edges of the back sheet, and the folded edge portions of the back sheet are folded into the absorbent pad. Each diaper is fixed to the front surface of the absorbent pad near the side edge of the pad, and the diaper is fixed to the front surface of the absorbent pad from the fold line to the side of the absorbent pad between the folded portion of the diaper and both end edges of each folded side edge of the back sheet. defining respective flaps at said side edges by forming respective first slits extending in the direction of the edges; said flaps passing through the inner ends of said first slits to the side edges of said absorbent pad; A notch is formed in the both side edges by cutting with a second slit extending along the side edge, and the folded back sheet is formed between the side edge of the absorbent pad and the side edge of the absorbent pad. The first and second slits are bonded to each other by a fastening line that extends continuously from the rear waist region to the front waist region of the diaper so as to be separated from each other in a fluid-tight manner.

The other method for manufacturing disposable diapers of the present invention is as follows:
The back surface of the absorbent pad is covered with a rectangular fluid-impermeable back sheet wider than the absorbent pad, and both side edges of the back sheet are located midway between the side edges of the absorbent pad and the side edges of the back sheet. Each of the folded back sheets is folded inward along the folding line extending in the longitudinal direction, and the edge portions of the folded back sheet are fixed to the front surface of the absorbent pad near the side edges of the absorbent pad, and the back sheet is folded inwards. By forming slits extending from the folding line toward the side edges of the absorbent pad between the folded portion of the diaper and both end edges of each folded side edge of the sheet, forming flaps, and folding both flaps over the front surface of the diaper along a fold line extending through the inner edge of the slit and along the side edges of the absorbent pad, a notch is formed in the diaper, and a fluid-impermeable barrier is formed in the lining of the diaper, and the folded back sheet of each side edge is connected to the side edge of the absorbent pad and the slit. The diapers are bonded to each other by a fastening line that extends continuously from the rear waist part to the front waist part of the diaper so that the diapers are separated in a fluid-tight manner.

When desired, the above-described diaper shown in FIGS. 1-5 and 7 can be used on infants. In this diaper, the side edges 46a and 46b of the back sheet cover the side edges of the absorbent pad, and the side edges 46a and 46b of the pad 22
A fluid-impermeable barrier is created adjacent to 6a, 26b.
Additionally, in the embodiment of FIGS. 1 and 5, fluid-tight flaps 54a, 54b create an additional fluid-tight barrier at the thighs of the diaper. Because the diaper has a relatively narrow front sheet and small absorbent pad dimensions, the cost of the diaper is low. Also, because of the notches 64 in the side panels of the arm, it fits better around the legs when applied to an infant. On top of that,
In this diaper, a pair of double layered rear waist portions 68a and a front waist portion 68b of the back sheet 24 are made up of absorbent pads 22 at both waist band portions 36a and 36b of the diaper 20.
extending from both sides of the When the diaper is applied to an infant, the rear waist portion 68a and front waist portion 68b surround the infant's waist. The retaining panel of the diaper of FIGS. 1-5 is extremely flexible since there is no absorbent material therein, and therefore fits extremely well around the infant's waist, making it easier to secure the diaper to the infant. As shown in FIG. 1, the diaper may be provided with conventional fastening strips extending from a rear waist portion 68a and a front waist portion 68b for securing the diaper when applied to an infant.

With the above structure, in the diaper shown in FIG.
It is fixed in an overlapping relationship with 6. The back sheet provides a fluid-impermeable back side of the flap panel 74a to the front side 34 of the pad 22, and
6a, 46b and flaps 54a, 54b create a double sealed barrier of backsheets between flap panels 74a, 74b and the front surface 34 of central panel 76. The backsheet thus prevents leakage or seepage from the side edges 26a, 26b of the absorbent pad (particularly at the edges 40 where the most fluid passes into the diaper).

When the diaper is in use, the rear waist portion 68 extends from the flap panels 74a, 74b of the waistband portion of the diaper.
a. The front waist portion 68b can be unfolded before applying the diaper to the infant. In the back portion 40 of the diaper, the flap panels 74a, 74b are held on the front surface of the central panel 76 by fixing means 78a, 78b.
The cutouts 64 allow the flaps 74a, 74b to fit snugly around the infant's legs. Moreover, the flexible rear waist section 68a and front waist section 68b fit comfortably around the infant's waist. Thus, the diaper of Figure 6 can be made in a simplified manner with an improved fit at the infant's thighs and hips. Additionally, although this diaper also reduces bulk to increase infant comfort, flap panels 74a, 7
The fluid barrier of the backsheet around 4b also prevents leakage from the part.

The method of manufacturing the diaper of the present invention has been described with reference to FIGS. 1-6. In this method, the back side of the absorbent pad is covered with a fluid-impermeable backing sheet that is wider than the pad. Next, the side portion of the back sheet is folded back along a folding line that extends vertically between the side edge of the pad and the side edge of the back sheet. Fix the edge of the folded side part to the front surface near the side edge of the pad, and cut a slit in the folded side part of both sides from the fold line to the side edge of the pad between the folded part and the edge of the diaper. A notch is formed on the side of the plate. Therefore, a barrier is formed on the folded side between the side edge of the pad and the slit to prevent leakage from the pad through the slit. The flap panels are made by placing two folded flap panels at the above intervals on the front surface of the pad along the folding line extending vertically at intervals between the pads.
It is preferable to attach it to the front surface of the pad in the middle of the fold line of the book.
