Description

The present invention relates to disposable diapers.
Various forms of disposable diapers have been proposed in the past - use on infants. Such diapers may usually be placed in two categories: ι diapers having a generally rectangular shape and which may be partially Olded when placed on the infant; and (b) diapers having a contoured shape to ivide a better fit on the infant. Generally, it has been found difficult to vide the rectangular diapers with a comfortable fit for the infant, particularly . . the crotch and thigh regions of the diaper, while the contoured diapers are en difficult to manufacture. In many cases, the irregular shape of the toured diapers requires the use of complex and high-precision machinery to duce such diapers in high volume, thus adding to the cost of the diapers to the sumer. Moreover, it is desirable that contoured diapers prevent leakage when i, particularly ih the crotch region of the diapers where fluid transmission the diapers is at its greatest.
The present invention provides a disposable diaper which is of simple ;truction and relatively easy to manufacture.
According to the present invention a disposable diaper comprises an - 2 4364? absorbent pad having, when in an unfolded condition, a pair of side edges, a front surface and a back surface, and a fluid-impervious backing sheet having, when in an unfolded condition, a pair of side edges and a width greater than the unfolded width of the pad, the backing sheet covering the said back surface of the pad and having side margins extending from the said side edges of the pad, the side margins of the backing sheet being folded about fold lines spaced from the respective side edges of the pad at least in a crotch region of the diaper, the folded-over portions of the margins of the backing sheet being secured to the front surface of the pad with the said side edges of the backing sheet near the said side edges of the pad; the folded margins outside the side edges of the pad defining side panels, each of which side panels has a recessed portion (as hereiniL.ftet' defined) in the crotch region of the diaper and each side panel, including the recessed portion, being folded over the front surface of the pad and secured, in the crotch region of the diaper, to the front surface of the pad. The term recessed portion as used herein means a portion containing a recess.
The diaper can be made with relatively little bulk in the crotch region, providing a comfortable fit.
The diaper may have laterally extending retaining panels of the backing sheet for placement around the infant's waist, thus providing an improved fit of the diaper in the infant's waist region.
The diaper may have fluid-impervious barrier means adjacent the edges of the pad in the crotch region to prevent leakage from the diaper.
The invention may be performed in various ways, and a specific embodiment, and some modifications thereof will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of the present invention before completion of folding into the final condition shown in Figure 6; Figure 2 is a fragmentary section taken along the line 2-2 of Figure 1; - 3 4 3 6 4 71 Figures 3 and 5 are fragmentary plan views illustrating configurations of this embodiment in an earlier stage of manufacture than Figures 1 and 2; Figures 4 and 7 are views similar to Figures 3 and 5, illustrating some modifications; aiid Figures 6 is a partly sectional perspective view of the fully folded diaper.
Referring now to Figures 1 and 2, there is shown a disposable diaper 20 prior- to folding into its fully folded conjunction, said diaper having an absorbent pad 22 and a fluid-impervious backing sheet 24. The absorbent pad illustrated has a rectangular shape, with a pair of side edges 26ei and 26b, a pair of end edges 28£ and 28b connecting the side edges 26£ and 26b and back surface 30. The pad 22 may have a fluid pervious top sheet 32 covering the front of the absorbent pad and defining a front surface 34 for the pad. The diaper 20 has a pair, of waistband prortions 36ji and 36b adjacent end edges 38£ and 38b of the diaper, and a crotch protion 40 therebetween. The backing sheet 24 has a greater unfolded width than the absorbent pad 22, and as illustrated in Figures 1 to 3, the backing sheet covers the back surface 30 of the absorbent pad 22 with side margins 42a and 42b of the hacking sheet extending past the side edges 26£ and 26b of the pad 22. The side margins 42a^ and 42b of the hacking sheet are folded over along fold lines 44a and 44b, and side edge portions 46^ and 46b of the side margins 42a and 42b are secured to the front surface of the pad, such that side edges 48a and 48b of the backing sheet are located intermediate the side edges 26a and 26^b of the pad 22. The folded-over side margins 42a and 42b define fluid-impervious side panels 50a and 50b and the fold lines 44a and 44b define edges of the side panels 50a and 50b. - 4 4 3 8 4 7 The fluid-impervious edge portions 46a and 46 b. of the side margins 42a and 42b provide a fluid barrier adjacent the side edges of the absorbent pad 22 to prevent leakage from the pad.
The side panels 50a and 50b are cut with pairs of slits 5 52js and 52 b. extending from the side edges 44a and 44b of the side panels toward the absorbent pad 22, the inner ends 60 of the slits 52a and 52b being outwardly spaced from the side edges 26a and 26b of the pad. The slits 52a and 52b are located intermediate the transverse centre line of the diaper and the end edges 38a and 38b of the diaper, and preferably intermediate the crotch region 40 and the end edges 38a and 38b of the diaper. Preferably, the slits 52a and 52b define obtuse angles with the side edges of the side panels 50a and 50b taken intermediate the slits and end edges of the diaper. The flaps 54a and 54b between the slits 52a and 52b in the side panels 50ji and 50b, as shown in Figures 1, 2 and 5, may be folded along fold lines 53a and 53b over the front surface of the pad. If desired, the flaps 54a and 54b may be secured in place on top of the pad 22 by suitable securing means 56a and 56b, such as adhesive, Alternatively as shown in Figure 4, further slits 58 may ne made in the side panels 50a and 50b between the inner ends 60 of the slits 52a and 52b and along the side edges 26a and 26b of the pad 22, such that the slits 58 and 52a and 52b extend around cut-out portions 62, which are removed from the side panels to form recesses 64 in the crotch region of the diaper. In either case, the removal of the cut-out portions 62 or the folding of the flaps 54a and 54b defines recesses 64 in the side panels 50ei and 50b, The side panels 50a and 50b are also provided with barrier means to prevent leakage through the slits.
As shown in Figures 3 and 5, the side panels 50a and 50b have longitudinally extending sealing lines 66a and 66b adjacent the side edges 26a^ and 26b of the absorbent pad 22. The sealing lines 66a and 66b~ are located intermediate the side edges 26a and 26b of the pad and the slits 52a and 52b or 58 to isolate the pad from the slits and prevent leakage from the pad at the slits. Alternatively, the outer longitudinal ends of the sealing lines 66a and 66b may be branched to follow-the slits 52a and 52b as shown at 66b' in Figure 4. Thus, in the Figure 4 modification the > sealing lines follow along the edges of the slits 58 and 52a and 52b. In each case the sealing lines prevent leakage at the slits in the side panels. The sealing lines 66a, 66b^ and 66b1 may be heat seal lines or lines - 6 of adhesive, as desired.
An alternative modification is illustrated in Figure 7, in which like reference numerals designate like parts to those in tiie previously described Figures.
In this arrangement the side and end edges of the absorbent pad 22 define a generally hour glass configuration of the pad when in the unfolded condition illustrated, the pad having at each end a pair of opposed side projections 57 extending into the side panels 50a and 50b adjacent the waistband portions 36a. and 36b. Thus, the projections 57 of the pad provide additional bulk to the side panels in the waistband portions and may transmit liquid into pockets defined by the backing sheet in these regions of the diaper for retention therein.
Side edge portions 46a. and 46b of the backing sheet cover side margins of the absorbent pad to provide fluid impervious barriers adjacent the side edges 26_a and 25 b. of the pad 22. In the embodiment shown in Figures 1 to 3, and 5, the fluid-impervious flaps 54a and 54b provide an additional fluid-impervious barrier in the crotch region of the diaper.
Each of the arrangements illustrated has a pair of retaining panels 68ji and 68b, which are parts of the side panels 50.a and 50b, extending from opposite sides of the pad 22 in each of the waistband portions 36.a and 36j).
As shown in Figure 1, the diaper may have conventional securing strips 70£ and 70b_ extending from the retaining panels 68a. and 68b for securing the diaper about the infant.
In the fully folded diaper as shown in Figure 6 the side panels 50a and 50^ are folded over the front surface of the pad along longitudinal fold lines 72a and 72b. The fold lines 72a and 72_b are preferably located intermediate the side edges 26a and 26b of the absorbent pad 22, such that the fold lines define longitudinally extending edge panels 74a. and 74b. which overlie the front surface 34 of a longitudinal extending central panel 76 of the pad 22 intermediate the fold lines 72a and 72ti. The edge panels 74.a and 74b are secured to the front surface 34 of the central panel 76 by suitable means 78a. and 78b, such as adhesive, in the - 7 crotch portion of the diaper.
As thus formed and as shown in Figure 6, the diaper has side margins )f the absorbent pad secured in overlying relationship to the central panel 76 of she absorbent pad 22. The backing sheet provides a fluid-impervious outer surface if the edge panels 74a. and 74b^ relative the front surface 34 of the pad 22, and the idge portions 46a. and 46b^ and the flaps 54 a. and 54b. provide a double sealing barrier f the backing sheet intermediate the edge panels 74a and 74 b. and the front surface 4 of the central panel 76. Thus, leakage and wicking is prevented from the side dges 26a and 26b. of the absorbent pad by the backing sheet, and particularly in he crotch region 40 of the diaper where fluid transmission to the diaper is at its reatest.
The retaining panels 68a and 68b extending from the edge panels 74a. id /4b in the waistband portion of the diaper are unfolded preparatory to acement of the diaper on the infant. The edge panels 74a and 74.b are retained by le securing means 78a. and 78b. to the front surface 34 of the central panel 76 in e crotch region 40 of the diaper. The flexible retaining panels 68a. and 68b fit mfortably about the waistline of the infant. The diaper thus provides a good t in the crotch and waist regions of the infant, and can be made in a simple nner. Moreover, the diaper provides less bulk in the crotch region for added nfort to the infant, while preventing leakage in the crotch region due to the Jid barriers of the backing sheet about the edge panels 74a and 74b.. The saining panels 68 a. and 68b in the embodiment of the Figures 1 to 3, 5 and 6, and > Figure 4 modification thereof are extremely flexible due to the absence of Orbent material therein, thus providing an excellent fit of the diaper in the ant's waist region, and facilitating securement of the diaper about the infant, already mentioned, the modified diaper as shown in Figure 7 has absorbent material the retaining panels, and such an arrangement may be used when greater absorbency required. The diaper has a narrower top sheet and a narrower absorbent pad ί a conventional disposable diaper, thus reducing the cost of the diaper. - 8 fc Ci *4 In making a diaper according to the present invention, the back surface of the absorbent pad is covered with a fluid-impervious backing sheet having a greater width than the pad. Next, lateral side margins of the backing sheet are folded over along longitudinally extending fold lines intermediate the side edges of the pad and the side edges of the backing sheet, defining side panels of the diaper outwardly of the side edges of the pad. The side edge portions of the folded-over side margins are secured to the front surface of the pad near the side edges of the pad, both of the folded-over side margins are slit intermediate the crotch region of the diaper and each end edge of the diaper from the fold lines toward the side edges of the pad, and recesses are formed in the folded-over side margins. A barrier is then provided in each of the folded-over side margins intermediate the side edges of the pad and the slits to prevent leakage from the pad at the slits. The side panels, with the recessed portions, are then folded over the front surface of the pad along spaced longitudinally extending fold lines in the pad and are secured to the front surface of the pad, in the crotch region of the diaper.
