Description

【発明の詳細な説明】 〔技術分野〕 本発明はインクジェット記録装置、特にインクを供給し
た噴射管内に駆動手段によって圧力波を発生させインク
を噴射させるインフジエラi・記録装置に関する。
〔従来技術〕
従来コンピュータシステム、或いはファクシミリなどの
記録出力手段としてインクジェット記録装置が知られて
いる。近年、この種の装置では特に必要な時のみ噴射管
からインクを吐出して記録を行なう、いわゆるオンデマ
ンド型の装置が普及しつつある。
第1図(A)〜(D)に従来のオンデマンド型インクジ
ェット記録ヘッドの構造を示す。第1図において符号1
で示されているものはインク噴射管で硬質のガラス細管
などから構成される。噴射管1の周囲には円筒状の圧電
素子4を巻き付けて固定しである。また噴射管1の先端
部はテーパ状に絞られており、その先端部には微細な(
直径100μm以下)オリフィス2が設けられている。
以上の構成において、噴射管1内にインク6を供給し駆
動手段としての圧電素子4に対して70図(r()に示
すように収縮変形し、噴射管内のインク6に圧力波が与
えられる。この結果オリフィス2からインク液滴5が吐
出され、紙などの記録媒体表面に付着さね記録ドツトが
形成される。駆動パルスが消勢すると圧電素子4は第1
図(C)に示すようにもとの形状に復帰する。
この時噴射管内のインク3は液滴5を吐出した分だけ減
少するので、図示するようにオリフィス近傍にインクが
ない部分が生じる。しかし一定時間の経過後、インク6
がインク供給手段から表面張力によって供給され、第1
図(D)に示すようにオリフィス2の先端部までインク
が供給された噴射可能状態に戻る。
ところで、第1図(B)の噴射時の圧力は図中右側のオ
リフィス方向のみでなく、左側の供給手段側へも同等に
働く。この方向への力は噴射そのものには損失であり、
インクを逆流させ第1図(C)〜(D)に示したインク
のりフィル動作を妨げ記録応答速度の向上の妨げとなっ
ている。
一方、ドツトによる記録画像に関してドツトのサイズを
変化させて濃淡を表現し中間調画像を記録する技術が知
られている。またドラi・の大きさを変化させるのが困
難な記録方式では単位面積当りのドツト数を変化させて
同様の効果を得る手法も知られている。
インクジェット記録方式ではドツトの大きさを変化させ
るのがインクの性質や制御回路が複雑化する問題もあり
、後者の方式が多用される。しかしドツト密度を変化さ
せる手法としては主に数ドツトのブロックで一画素を表
現する方式が多く用いられており、記録密度が高い場合
にのみ有効な方法である。したがって低解像度のプリン
タではこのような方式では一画素の面積が大きくなって
しまうので中間調の表現が困難である。
〔目 的〕
本発明は以上の従来の欠点に鑑みてなされたもので、駆
動力の損失が少くスムーズなインクのりフィル動作によ
り素子の応答速度を向上させるとともに簡単安価にドツ
ト面積の変化による中間調の画像記録が可能なインクジ
ェット記録装置を提供することを目的とする。
〔実 施 例〕
以下、図面に示す実施例に基づき本発明の詳細な説明す
る。
第2図に本発明によるインクジェット記録ヘッドの構造
を示す。第2図にみるように、本発明においては圧電素
子4の後方、すなわちオリフィス2とは反対側にインク
供給側に第2の駆動手段として圧電素子7を設けである
。第2の圧電素子7け第1の圧電素子4と同等かより小
さい長さに構成され、第1の圧電素子と同等または小さ
な駆動力を持つものとしである。
第1と第2の圧電素子4,7の駆動タイミングを第3図
(4)〜(匂に示す。
第3図囚〜(E)は5種類の駆動タイミングを示してお
り、図中破線で示したパルスが第2の圧電素子7に対す
る駆動パルス、実線が第1の圧電素子4に対する駆動パ
ルスである。第3図(4)〜(E)の各駆動パルスは第
1と第2の圧電素子に対する駆動時間差tを例えば0〜
50μs程度の範囲で変化させた例を示している。
実際のインク吐出タイミングは実線で示した第1の圧電
素子の、駆動タイミングであるが、これに先だって第2
の圧電素子7を異った時間差で駆動すると、吐出時の圧
電素子4によるインク供給側への不要な圧力波を阻止す
ることができる。従ってインク3の逆流が防止されイン
クのりフィル動作がスムーズに行われるので応答速度を
上昇させて記録速度を向上できる。以上の逆流阻止は物
理的な圧力阻止ではないので不要かつ複雑な反射波を発
生させることがない。
また第1と第2の圧電素子4,7の駆動時間差tを変化
させることにより2つの圧電素子によって発生する圧力
波のぶつかり合う作用点の位置を調節して吐出されるイ
ンク液滴の直径を変化させることができる。これによっ
て記録媒体に記録されるドツトの面積を調節することが
でき、ドツト面積の変化による濃淡の表現が可能となる
。従来方式では圧電素子の駆動電圧を変化させてドット
径を変化させるため、主としてデジタル回路から構成さ
れた制御回路の出力をアナログ量に変換する手段を必要
とし、回路が複雑高価になるのに対して、上記の方式に
よれば駆動時間差のみによりドツト面積を調整できるた
め制御回路の構成がより簡単安価になる利点がある。
第4図(A)〜(ト))は本発明の他の実施例を示すも
ので、第3図(4)〜(E)と同様に第1と第2の圧電
素子4.7の駆動パルスを示している。各図は実線で示
した第1の圧電素子4の駆動電圧を変化させた例を示し
ている。ここでは第1と第2の圧電素子の駆動時間差は
一定値に固定されている。
このような駆動方法によってもインクの逆流を防止する
とともに記録ドツトの大きさを変化させて濃淡を表現す
ることができる。
以上ではオンデマンド型のインクジェット記録装置を実
施例として説明したが、他の方式のインクジェット記録
装置にも本発明が実施できるのはもちろんである。
〔効果〕
以上の説明から明らか々ように、本発明によれば主たる
第1の駆動手段に加えて噴射管のインク供給側に第2の
駆動手段を設けた構成を採用しているので有害なインク
噴射管内の逆流を防止し、スムーズなインクのりフィル
動作を可能とするとともに駆動ダイナミックレンジを広
げ、簡単安価な制御回路によってドツトサイズの調節に
よる中間調の画像記録を行える優れたインクジェット記
録装置を提供することができる。

Claims (2)

    【特許請求の範囲】
  1. (1)流路内にインクを供給し駆動素子により前記流路
    内に圧力波を発生させ、流路先端のオリフィスからイン
    ク液滴を噴射させて記録を行なうインクジェット記録装
    置において、前記流路の駆動手段よりもインク供給側に
    近い位置に第2の駆動手段を設け、駆動時に第1と第2
    の駆動手段をある時間差を介して駆動するとともにこの
    時間差を可変としたことを特徴とするインクジェット記
    録装置。
  2. (2)前記第1と第2の駆動手段の駆動時間差を一定値
    に固定し、第1の駆動手段の駆動力を可変としたことを
    特徴とする特許請求の範囲第1項に記載のインクジェッ
    ト記録装置。
