Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable transfer recording with high quality to be performed irrespectively of the state of the surface of a recording paper, by a method wherein an auxiliary transfer layer capable of being adhered to a paper when being pressed by a thermal head at the time of recording and compatible with heat- fusible ink is provided on the surface of a heat-fusible ink layer. CONSTITUTION:Though a base layer 3 and the heat-fusible ink layer 2 are the same as those in a conventional thermal transfer medium, the auxiliary transfer layer 1 is colorless or transparent, is capable of being adhered to a paper when being pressed by the thermal head, and is compatible with the heat-fusible ink. Accordingly, when the thermal head is driven according to recording information and is pressed against a recording paper through the thermal transfer medium, the auxiliary transfer layer 1 is adhered to the surface of the paper, and since the layer 1 is compatible with the heat-fusible ink, transfer recording of the ink layer 2 is easily performed.

Using this thermal transfer medium, the thermal transfer operation will be explained based on FIG. 2(b). When the thermal head 6 having vJ number of heating elements is driven according to the recording signal, the head 6
The heat-melting ink MI4 on the pace layer 5 in contact with is melted, and this melted ink 4° is transferred to the recording paper 7.
A transfer image is formed on the recording paper 7 in accordance with the recording signal, and can be transferred to recording paper using plain paper.

However, since conventional thermal transfer media penetrate thermally molten ink into the surface of the recording paper, they are easily affected by the surface of the recording paper 7. For example, if the Beck smoothness of the recording paper 7 is 40 seconds In addition, the ink will not be applied uniformly, which will cause image quality deterioration.

Hereinafter, the thermal transfer medium according to the present invention will be explained in detail. FIG. 1 shows an embodiment of the present invention, which is a polyester film or a polyimide film with a thickness of about 3 to 15 μm. The base layer 3 is made of a plastic film such as cellophane or condenser paper, and a pigment or dye is added as a coloring agent to a wax such as carnauba wax, ester wax, or paraffin wax, and if necessary, oil or the like is added as a softener. In addition, a heat-melting ink layer 2 having a melting point (softening point) of about 50 to 100° C. is coated on the base layer 3 at a temperature of about 3 to 527° C., and on this, bees wax, paraffin wax, etc. A softener is added to the ink, and if necessary, substances such as cellulose ester and cellulose ether, which have a weak affinity with paper, are added, and the #A meltable ink is adhered to the paper by the pressure of the thermal head during thermal transfer operation. It is constructed by providing a transfer auxiliary layer that is compatible with the transfer auxiliary layer.

In the above configuration, the base layer 3 and the heat-melting ink layer 2 are similar to those of conventional heat-sensitive transfer media, but the transfer auxiliary layer 1
is colorless or transparent, and as described above, it adheres to paper by pressure from a thermal head and is compatible with heat-melting ink. Therefore, when the thermal head is driven according to recording information and is pressed against the recording paper through the thermal transfer medium, the transfer auxiliary layer 1 adheres to the surface of the recording paper due to the pressure, and the heat-melting ink layer 2 Since they are compatible, conditions are created that facilitate transfer recording of the ink layer 2. As a result of using the thermal transfer medium according to the present invention, it was confirmed that uniform image quality could be obtained even with a Peck smoothness of 40 seconds or less.
