Abstract

PURPOSE:To collect a spark plug and the like together on the upper part in making an engine long endwise as well as to aim at facilitation in cover opening, by standing a cylinder upright with a crankshaft made into almost nearly horizontality, while installing an intermediate shaft in the lower part of the crankshaft, and transmitting its rotation to a vertical driving shaft through a bevel gear. CONSTITUTION:A cylinder 18 is made to stand upright, then a crankshaft 22 is turned to be sideways, and spark plug and a carburetor 32 to be installed in a cylinder head are set up on the top of an engine 16. With this constituion, even when a cover is made to be shallow enough, maintainability in the engine 16 is in no case hindered and, what is more, installing work for the cover is well facilitated. In addition, the cylinder 18, an intermediate shaft 40 and a driving shaft 50 are put altogether in a row in regular succession, and the whole engine 16 is made up to be long endways and slender build whereby an opening area of the cover 56 can be made smaller, therefore the overall length of a seal part between the cover 56 and an opening edge becomes shortened, thus sealability is improved. And, what is more, since a position of the seal part comes to be higher than a water level of the engine 16, it makes water hard to wet the seal part.

In many conventional outboard motors, the crankshaft was arranged vertically, so in the case of multi-cylinder engines in particular, the spark plugs and carburetors of each cylinder were located over a fairly wide range in the vertical direction. The engine cover had to have a vertically elongated shape, that is, an inverted cylinder with a deep bottom, and the sealing part had to be located below the engine. For this reason, the cover has a structure in which the entire cover must be lifted upward to be attached or removed, and this poses a problem in that, especially in the case of large outboard motors, it is very difficult to attach or remove the cover.

Therefore, it is possible to install a cover that opens and closes laterally on the side of the engine, but in this case, the curved surface of the cover is pressed against the sealing member to seal, so the pressing force may be insufficient due to the rigidity of the cover itself. There was an inconvenience that there remained concerns about sealing properties.

In addition, in order to fix this cover, a frame must be provided to surround the engine. In the case of a V-type engine where the frame does not pass near the spark plug, this frame does not require maintenance in the case of a normal in-line engine. There was also the problem of becoming a major obstacle.

(Purpose of the Invention) The present invention has been made in view of the above circumstances, and is designed to allow maintenance of spark plugs, carburetor, etc. from one side of the engine, and to open and close the cover with a shallow bottom using a hinge. (Structure of the Invention) - In order to achieve this object, the present invention arranges the crankshaft approximately horizontally, and provides an intermediate shaft rotatably driven by the crankshaft below the part of the crankshaft that raises the cylinder upward. By transmitting rotation to a nearly vertical drive shaft via a bevel gear located in the lower crankcase, the entire engine has a vertically long and slim shape, and the spark plug and carburetor are located above the engine. The engine cover is shallower and has a smaller opening area. The present invention will be described in detail below based on the illustrated embodiments.

62 is a stern plate, 64 is a clamp bracket fixed to this stern plate 62, and 66 is a swivel bracket attached to this clamp bracket 64 by a tilt shaft 68. A steering shaft 70 is rotatably held in the bearing cylinder portion 66A of the swivel bracket 66.
Mounting arms 72 are attached to the upper and lower ends of the steering shaft 70, respectively.
74 is fixed. The second mounting arm 72 passes through the upper casing 12 and is connected to the front surface of the cylinder 18 via a known cylindrical rubber damper 76 attached to its tip. That is, the damper 76 includes a rubber member baked between the inner and outer cylinders, and the inner cylinder is fixed to the mounting arm 72 and the outer cylinder is fixed to the cylinder 18, respectively. Lower mounting arm 7
4 is formed into a bifurcated shape as shown in FIG.
It is connected to both left and right side surfaces of the upper casing 12 below the engine 16 via. These rubber dampers 76

According to this embodiment, the cylinder 18 is upright and the crankshaft 22 is oriented horizontally, so the spark plug and carburetor 32 provided in the cylinder head 24 are located at the top of the engine 16. Therefore, even if the cover 56 is made shallow, the maintainability of the engine 16 is not hindered.

Also cylinder 18. Intermediate shaft 40. Since the drive shafts 50 are arranged substantially vertically in sequence, the entire engine 16 can be made vertically long and slender, and the opening area of the cover 56 can be reduced. Therefore, the total length of the seal between the cover 56 and the opening edge is shortened, and the sealing performance is improved. Furthermore, since this seal is located high above the water surface above the engine 16, it is difficult for water to splash onto the seal, and driftwood, etc. floating during cruising can be removed from the cover 5.
Accidents such as damage to the cover 56 caused by hitting the cover 56 can also be prevented.

On the other hand, in this embodiment, the engine 16 is a four-stroke engine, and the intermediate shaft 40. Since the bevel gear 48 is immersed in the lubricating oil in the crankcase 20, there is no need to provide a separate lubrication mechanism for these (there is also the effect that lubrication can be performed reliably with a simple structure).

Especially (= 4-cycle engine and tilting the cylinder 18 slightly backwards) (= Therefore, since we have secured the housing space for the carburetor 32 and the damper 76 in front of the cylinder 18, it is not necessary to place the cylinder 18 in the crankcase like when using a 2-stroke engine. This eliminates the need for the crankcase to become larger due to the connecting intake pipe, and allows the engine to be made even more slender.

(Effects of the Invention) As described above, in the present invention, the crankshaft is set approximately horizontally and the cylinder is raised upward, so that parts that require maintenance such as the spark plug and carburetor are concentrated at the top of the engine.

The engine cover can be made shallower, making opening and closing operations much easier. Also, since the engine is very slender, the opening area of the engine cover becomes smaller, improving the sealing performance of the cover. Furthermore, since the seal part of the cover is located at a position sufficiently high above the water surface, it has the effect of allowing more water to enter the cover and making it difficult for objects such as driftwood to come into contact with the cover.
