Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce cost and to bring a liquid developer into gradual contact with a photosensitive surface by providing a mechanism which rises and lowers the level of the liquid developper with respect to a developing head. CONSTITUTION:When a developing soln. tank 21 is risen, the liquid developer 20 in the tank 21 flows through a communicating pipe 24 and contacts a photosensitive body 31a in entering the inside of a developing chamber 23. When the liquid level rises higher then the top end position of the chamber 23 on ascending of the tank 21, the excess developer 20 in the chamber 23 flows through a pipe 24 into an overfow tank 26. The developer 20 is filled in the chamber 23 and after the developer contacts the entire surface of the photosensitive surface 31a, the tank 21 is lowered. Then the developer 20 in the chamber 23 and the developer in the tank 26 return to the inside of the tank 21. The lowering of the tank 21 is stopped where the liquid level of the developer 20 falls below the bottom end of a pipe 29 on descending of the tank 21. Air is thereafter introduced through a pipe 28 to perform squeezing. The introduced air is discharged by passing through a developing chamber 23, the pipe 29 and an air vent 30.

Here, a conventional electrophotographic apparatus using liquid toner will be described with reference to FIG. As shown in the figure, a developing head 1 of this type is equipped with a mask 2, and this mask 2 has an opening 2a having a width corresponding to one frame of the photosensitive material 3. The open end 2b is in contact with the electrophotographic photosensitive material 3. As a result, the photosensitive WJ3a for one frame of the photosensitive material 3 faces the opening 2a, and by applying the liquid developer 4 to the photosensitive surface 3a through the opening 2a, a predetermined M image is developed. . Following this development, the liquid developer 4 adhering to the photosensitive surface 38 is removed (hereinafter referred to as "squeezing"), and this squeeze is also performed by injecting air, for example, onto the photosensitive surface 3a through the opening 2a. This is done by applying gas. Therefore, the liquid developer 4 and gas (air in this example) are introduced into the opening 2a.
It is necessary to transport the developer to the developer tank 5.
The liquid developer 4 stored in the tank is sucked up by the vacuum pump 6, and when the valve 7 is opened, air is sucked in from the air by the vacuum pump 6 as well. and,
Excess liquid developer 4 after development and air after squeezing are returned to the developer tank 5. That is, there is a flow path 8 that extends from the tank 5 to the inside of the developing head 1 and communicates with the opening 2a, and an end that is open to the atmosphere that passes through the valve 7 and reaches the inside of the developing head 1, upstream of the opening 2a. Along with a flow path 9 that merges with the flow path 8, a flow path 10 is formed that extends from the opening 2a to the outside of the developing head 1, passes through the vacuum pump 6, and returns to the developer tank 5.

However, in this prior art, the liquid developer 4 is applied to the photosensitive surface 3.
Since the liquid developer 4 is applied to the photosensitive surface 3a, a part of the liquid developer 4 attached to the photosensitive surface 3a may be removed depending on the degree of application.
This results in unevenness in the amount of liquid developer 4 that adheres to the photosensitive surface 3a.

In this embodiment, the amount of liquid developer 20 necessary for development is
Since the developer is placed in the sub-developer tank 21a and only the necessary amount is used for development, there is no waste, and the effort required to move the sub-developer tank 21a up and down is also small. Note that if the pipe 33 is made narrow, the valve 32 is not necessarily necessary. In other words, if the pipe 33 is thin, the sub-developer tank 2
When 1a is raised, the pipe 33 produces an effect similar to that of an orifice, and most of the liquid developer 20 in the sub-developer tank 21a flows into the developing chamber 23 through the communication pipe 24.

As specifically explained above in conjunction with the embodiments, according to the present invention, costs can be reduced because no pump is used, and since the liquid developer gradually comes into contact with the photosensitive surface, the liquid developer is applied evenly to the photosensitive surface. The image quality can be improved by attaching the agent.
