Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce sound large-sized steel ingots with good productivity by symmetrically installing molds on a rotary table surface, and teeming molten steel into the molds then solidifying the same while rotating the table.
CONSTITUTION: Molten steel is teemed into each mold 6 from a molten steel teeming pipe 8 through a chimney flue 9, after which a drive motor is operated to rotate a rotary table 1. In this case, the total weight of the table 1, the molds 6, etc. is mainly supported by supporting rollers 5, and the load exerted upon bearings 3 is relatively light. In this way, the molten metal in the molds 6 is solidified while the table 1 is being rotated, and since large centrifugal forces are acted by this upon the molten steel, the air gaps at the interfaces of the molten steel and the molds air considerably decreased and the rate of solidification is increased. Therefore, the macrosegregation specific to the large-sized steel ingots is reduced and the loose structure in the axial center part is reduced.
