Abstract

PURPOSE: A viscose containing a specific organophosphorus compound is subjected to wet spinning, the formed fiber is carbonized by heating, then activated by heat treatment in a specific atmosphere to produce carbon fiber with increased adsorptivity without any adverse effect on its strength and appearance.
CONSTITUTION: Viscose is mixed with a organophosphorus compound of formulaI[X1WX4 are O. S. -NR5- (R5 is R1WR3, H); X5 is =O, =S, =NH; R1W R3 are alkyl, aryl, which may be substituted with halogen atoms; R4 is alkylene, arylene, which may be substituted; n is 0W100; m, x, y, z are 0, 1 where x+y+z is 1 or more)]such as a polyphosphonate of 4,500 average molecular weight having recurring unit of formula II by 1W30, preferably 3W20wt% based on the cellulose. The fiber resulting from wet spinning is carbonized by heat treatment at 150W400°C and activated by heat treatment in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide, oxygen and/or steam at over 350°C.
