Abstract
PURPOSE:To perform developing of high gradation characteristic by applying AC or pulsating current bias between a conductive elastic roller and a support electrode of an electrostatic image holding layer. CONSTITUTION:Voltage of AC or pulsating current is applied from a bias source 9 to between the front and rear regions of the nearest contact point P between a support electrode 1 of an electrostatic image holding body and a conductive developing roller 3, and an electric field in accordance with this is formed. In the bright part in this electric field formation, the intensity of the electric field is controlled smaller than the threshold electric field intensity for the purpose of transfer at the electric field in the direction where the toner transfers from the surface of a roller surface layer 5 to an image plane 2 to prevent brackground staining, and is set larger than the threshold electric field intensity for the purpose of transfer in the direction of returning the toner transferred to the image plane to the roller surface at the interface in said direction, whereby photographing fogs are prevented.
