Abstract

PURPOSE:To stably manufacture KOH of high purity and concn. at low power unit by electrolyzing an aqueous KCl soln. unde specified conditions using a cation exchange membrane having a composite structure composed of fluorinated polymers each having fluoroalkylsulfonic acid (salt) group in the side chain. CONSTITUTION:When an aqueous KCl soln. is electrolyzed using an electrolytic cell divided into anode and cathode chambers by a cation exchange membrane to manufacture KOH and gaseous Cl2, the following conditions are satisfied. The membrane is provided with a composite structure composed of >=2 kinds of fluorinated polymers different from each other in specific electic conductivity and each having -(CF2)3SO3M (where M is H, a metal or NH4) in the side chain or part of the side chain. The concn. of the aqueous KOH soln. produced in the cathode chamber is adjusted to 3.5-12N. The Ca and Mg content of the aqueous KCl slon. fed to the anode chamber is restricted to <=0.5ppm. The current density during electrolysis is regulated to 25-50A/dm<2>. The surface layer of the multiple membrance made of fluorinated polymer with lowe specific electric conductivity is faced the cathode side.
