Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve the shape controlling ability of a mill roll by partially changing its rigidity, by cutting axially the inner surface of an outer shell layer into a convex circumferential surface or a concave one, and casting a core on the cut inner surface. CONSTITUTION:An outer shell layer 3 is cast on the inner surface of a chiller 1 for mold, and a supporting rod 5, equipped with a cutting tool 4 on its tip, is inserted into the shell layer 3 immediately after the shell layer 3 is solidified. Then the inner surface of the shell layer 3 is cut into a convex circumferential shape as shown by dotted line A or a concave shape as shown by dotted line B, by moving the tool 4 axially while changing the feeding quantity of it radially to the inner surface of the shell layer 3, under rotating the chiller 1. Thus a composite roll whose thickness of the outer shell layer 3 is axially nonuniform is cast, by casting a core 6 in the outer shell layer 3.
