Abstract

PURPOSE: To develop a rare earth element-Co permanent magnet with superior magnetic characteristics by casting an alloy consisting of Co, Sm and a specified metallic element so that most of the solidified structure is made columnar, pulverizing the ingot, and binding the powder with a binder.
CONSTITUTION: An Sm-Co-M alloy consisting of 21W28% Sm, 2.0W10% Al, Ag, Au, Pd, Pt, Ni, Zn, In, Sn or Pb which may be combined with Cu, and the balance Co is melted in an inert gaseous atmosphere and cast in a mold 1. By controlling the cooling rate after the casting, the cast alloy is solidified so that most of the solidified structure is composed of columnar crystals B. The ingot is subjected to soln. heat treatment, aged, and pulverized. This powder is press- molded with a polymer such as epoxy resin as a binder in a magnetic field, and the polymer is cured. Thus, a permanent magnet composed chiefly of Sm2Co17 type crystals and having superior magnetic characteristics such as superior re- sidual magnetic flux density and coercive force is obtd.
