Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a tryptophan derivative chemically and particularly microbiologically convertible into L-tryptophan industrially and advantageously, by hydrolyzing an N-(substituted methylene)tryptophan ester derivative as a raw material under acidic conditions.
CONSTITUTION: An N-(substituted methylene)tryptophan ester derivative expressed by formula I[R1 is H, lower alkyl or (un)substituted aryl; R2 is (un) substituted aryl; R3 is lower alkyl]as a raw material is hydrolyzed under acidic conditions, e.g. hydrochloric or acetic acid, to prepare a tryptophan derivative expressed by formula II. The resultant compound expressed by formula II is then hydrolyzed in the presence of a base, e.g. sodium hydroxide, to afford tryptophan and treated by a microorganism to give L-tryptophan easily without passing through many troublesome steps. By-products formed in preparing the tryptophan are reusable as the starting raw material.
