PURPOSE:To prevent under-shooting as well as over-shooting of engine speed, by advancing or delaying the ignition timing temporarily when switching between a ''drive'' range and a ''neutral'' range is effected on the basis of the output a range detecting switch. CONSTITUTION:An electronic control unit 14 controls the quantity of fuel ejected from a fuel injection valve 15 through detection of the fact that the output signal of an oxygen-density detector 46 is inverted from ''lean'' side to ''rich'' side and vice versa. At the same time, the control unit 14 controls operation of an ignitor 41 on the basis of the outputs of a cylinder discriminating sensor 43, rotational angle sensor 44, etc. Here, arrangement is such that the ignition timing is delayed by a prescribed angle in case that a torque converter is switched from its ''drive'' range to ''neutral'' range in response to the output signal of a range detecting switch 49 but advanced by a prescribed angle in case that the torque converter is switched reversely.
