Abstract
PURPOSE:To provide a magnetic recording medium having a protecting layer of superior mechanical strength, adhesive strength to a magnetic recording layer, surface smoothness, etc. by forming a magnetic metallic layer, and the protecting layer consisting of a non-magnetic Ni-base alloy contg. a specific amt. of P on a base material successively. CONSTITUTION:A conductive layer 2 consisting of a non-magnetic metal of copper or the like, an underlying metallic layer 3 consisting of a non-magnetic metallic material such as nickel alloy, and a magnetic metallic layer 4 consisting of a magnetic alloy of Ni-Co-P alloy, etc. are formed successively on a base material 1 consisting of polyester or the like by an electroless plating or the like. Thence, a protecting layer 5 consisting of a non-magnetic Ni-base alloy contg. 1-15wt% P and more preferably further contg. hardness improving elements of >=one kind selected from Mo, W, Re, Ru and Rh at an amt. up to 20wt% is formed on the layer 4 by an electroplating method using a plating bath contg. bivalent nickel ions and hypophosphite ions or the like, whereby the intended magnetic recording medium is obtained.
