Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent overheating of a catalyst and accompanying stink by always supplying secondary air to an exhaust system in order to cool the catalyst independently of output of an oxygen sensor while an engine is idle and an air conditioner is in operation.
CONSTITUTION: Normally, operation of a catalyst is controlled by entering the output from an oxygen sensor 64 located in an exhaust passage ino an OR gate 60, subsequently opening or closing a solenoid valve 50 with the output 68, from said gate and then opening or closing an operational negative pressure duct 48 of a diaphragm 46 for a controlling valve 44 in a duct 42 which supplies secondary air to an exhaust system. Further, a duct 42 is led to a duct 24 in EGR duct passage 24, 28, while a control valve 26 in the EGR duct passage is controlled by a port negative pressure located in an upstream of air supply durng a throttle valve 32 is entirely closed. When SW72 is ON and both outputs of a detector 70 for of idle engine speed are entered in an AND gate 66 during opertion of the air conditioner the solenoid valve 50 is opened indenpendently of the oxtgen sensor output 62 of the OR gate 60 so as to supply the secondary air.
