Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a battery of a high electric capacity density by restricting the theoretical capacity of a negative electrode made of an amalgamated zinc to below 75% of that of a positive electrode made of manganese dioxide. CONSTITUTION:A positive electrode 3 is made of manganese dioxide, while a negative electrode 4 is made of an amalgamated zinc. The theoretical electric capacity of the negative electrode 4 is restricted to below 75% of that of the positive electrode. The voltage of an alkaline manganese battery, which varies according to the ratio of the Mn<4+> concentration to the Mn<3+> concentration in the former manganese dioxide, takes a S-form course with time of the discharge. When a battery containing industrial manganese dioxide is discharged from the point when the voltage is 1.6V until the point when the voltage is 1.3V, the amount of Mn<4+> decreases from 98% to 24%, and only 64% of the Mn<4+> contributes to discharge. The theoretical electric capacity of manganese dioxide is 308mAH/g when the whole Mn<4+> ions are supposed to be reduced into Mn<3+>, and the amount of zinc should be 64% of the amount of manganese dioxide. The actual amount of zinc is preferred to be below 75% of the amount of manganese dioxide by taking 10% margin of weighing capacity error or the like. Consequently, a battery of a high electric capacity disnsity can be obtained.
