Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve strength and durability by forming a rough material beforehand in a way as to form excess metals of set length in an axial direction to the opening part of an outer race and hardening the outer race in such a way that the set hardening ends exist at the rolling groove ends of the ball rolling groove of the outer race. CONSTITUTION:A process for production of an outer race wherein the outer race of a BIRFIELD type constant-velocity joint is subjected to hardening for impartion of residual compressive stress to the ball rolling groove thereof. More specifically, a rough material 1' having excess metals 5, 2' of set length for the axial opening part 4 of the outer race is formed, and the hardening ending at the part 4 is carried out to the material 1' at the partial thickness of a ball rolling groove 2. Next, it is cooled, and the excess metals 5, 2' are cut off by a means such as machining, whereby an outer race conforming to the design is obtained.
