Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a roller with an inner layer material which has sufficiently strong toughness even when the roller shell is thin, by pad welding a low-alloy inner layer material to a high-alloy outer layer material of the roller used in steel rolling facilities. CONSTITUTION:An outer layer 2 made of, for example, a material containing high C and high Cr, is formed by a centrifugal casting, and the blank material for making the outer layer is preheated to an appropriate temperature after the inner surface is smoothly finished. Then, an inner layer material 3 made of a low-alloy pad welding material, such as a mild steel selding rod, etc., and having a prescribed thickness, is pad-welded to the inner surface of the blank material 2. Thereafter, this composite shell 1 is subjected to a heat treatment and a wear resisting property is given to the outer layer material 2. Moreover, the composite shell 1 is finished to a product by machining. In this case, no machining is required for the inner surface of the shell 1. It is recommended that the pad welding must be made to form a multilayer padding, because bad influences caused by mixing of the outer layer material into the inner layer material are more effectively restrained.
