Abstract

PURPOSE:To manufacture a base material for an optical fiber with an arbitrary refractive index distribution by changing the flow rate of a secondary additive (O2 or SiCl4) in the manufacture of a quartz glass film by an internal CVD method using GeO2 as a principal additive. CONSTITUTION:The refractive index (h) of a quartz glass film obtd. by an internal CVD method using GeO2 as a principal additive is represented by the equation (where nsio2 is the refraetive index of quartz; y1 is the flow rate of oxygen; y2 is the flow rate of SiCl4; y3 is the flow rate of GeCl4; and each of beta, gamma is a constant). Accordingly, by changing the flow rate of a secondary additive (O2 or SiCl4) while keeping the flow rate of GeO2 constant, an optical fiber with an arbitrary refractive index distribution can be manufactured effectively.
