PURPOSE:To produce an optical fiber having a large difference in refractive index between core and clad by feeding a mixed gas of GeCl4, SiCl4 and O2 gas into a glass tube as clad; heating the mixed gas to attach core glass to the bottom of the tube; and drawing the glass together with the tube. CONSTITUTION:Mixed gas G of GeCl4 and/or POCl4 SiCl4 and O2 gas is fed from nozzle 3 into glass tube 1 made of high m.p., low refractive index glass such as quartz glass or Vycor glass and held by glass tube feeder 9. By heating gas G with heater 4 molten core glass 5 of a high refractive index is attached to the bottom of tube 1, and glass 5 is drawn together with tube 1 to obtain optical fiber 6 having core and clad.
