Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare β-hydroxyvaleric acid by treating valeric acid with micro- organisms belonging to Candida genus.
CONSTITUTION: Valeric acid is converted to β-hydroxyvaleric acid by the aerobic cultivation of microorganisms belonging to Candida genus, e.g. Candida rugosa IFO0750 strain, 1542 strain, etc. in a medium containing valeric acid at 4.0W9.5 pH. As an alternative method, β-hydroxyvaleric acid can be prepared by culturing the above microorganisms in a nutrient medium, adding valeic acid to the cultivation liquid or a suspension of microorganisms obtained from the liquid, and reacting under aerobic conditions at 6.0W9.0pH.
