Abstract

CONSTITUTION: In an electrolityc cell provided with an ion exchange membrane dividing an anode and a cathode, a porous layer permeable to gas and liq. and having no electrode activity is formed on a surface of the membrane. This layer is made of modified polytetrafluoroethylene prepared by copolymerizing a monomer contg. an acid type functional group as well as fluorine with a modifier, and it has about 0.01W200μm average pore diameter and about 10W99% porosity. At least one of the anode and the cathode is brought into contact with the membrane surface by pressing or other method. Thus, the adhesion of the porous layer to the ion exchange membrane is made sufficient, and the function of the cell is enhanced.
