Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording material having high coercive force and high density of magnetic flux and abounds in dispersibility by a method wherein iron nitride is made to be contained in metallic iron powder having iron as the main component. CONSTITUTION:Iron nitride of 10-70% is made to be contained in metallic iron powder having iron as the main component and having 10% or less of content of metal other than iron of cobalt, nickel, zinc, chromium, etc. As the manufacturing method thereof, after surface treatment with silicate of soda, etc., is performed on iron oxide of alpha-iron oxide, triiron tetraoxide, etc., or hydroiron oxide of alpha-hydroiron oxide, gamma-hydroiron oxide, etc., having grain shape of needle crystal, it is reduced and nitrified in ammonium gas at the temperature of 400-700 deg.C. Accordingly the iron powder for magnetic recording having magnetic characteristic of He 400- 700Oe, sigmas90-130emu/g with noise level as before can be obtained.
