Abstract

PURPOSE: To decrease the hydrolyzable chlorine content of a crude epoxy compound obtained from a polyhydric phenol and an epihalohydrin, by treating the crude compound in a mixed system of an aqueous alkali metal hydroxide solution and a hydrophobic solvent containing a quat. ammonium salt (group).
CONSTITUTION: A crude epoxy compound (A) prepared by reacting a polyhydric phenol, e.g., bisphenol A, with an epihalohydrin, e.g., epichlorohydrin (if the compound contains any unreacted epihalohydrin, after removing it) is diluted with a hydrophodic solvent, e.g., toluene, then, mixed with 0.01W3wt%, based on compound A, quat. ammonium salt (group), e.g., benzyl-triethylammonium chloride, further mixed with an aqueous alkali metal hydroxide solution in an amount to provide 1.1W2 alkali metal hydroxide molecules per hydrolyzable chlorine atom and agitated at 60W90°C. The aqueous layer formed is separated and the hydrophobic solvent is distilled off to obtain an epoxy compound.
